Welcome

from

Sir Lachlan Maclean

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Clan Maclean website. The website has been produced in collaboration with the Clan Maclean Association which was founded over 125 years ago in 1892. I am the 28th hereditary Chief of the Clan Maclean and I live at Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull, which is the ancestral home of the Clan. Duart Castle was being restored by my great-grandfather just before the First World War and in 1912 the first Gathering of the Clan at Duart took place for Sir Fitzroy to show the members of the Clan the Castle he had bought back and was restoring. We had another Gathering in 2012 to commemorate the centenary of that first Gathering and over 1000 Macleans from all over the world came and visited Duart and took part in the celebrations.

The Clan Maclean Association is the original association and over the years has been joined by Maclean Associations all around the world. Individuals of Maclean ancestry and those from the many sept families of the Clan have united together to form these Associations.

The Association's primary goal is to encourage those with that special Maclean heritage to join together to celebrate their common links and culture so that future generations continue to know where their heritage lies. The Clan Maclean Heritage Trust (CMHT) is instrumental in achieving this goal.

Through the Association, members discover the significance of their surname; explore their genealogical links with the Clan and the Scottish homeland of their ancestors. They will often discover more about Maclean history and the diaspora of Macleans worldwide and form social links. Whatever your walk of life or interest in the Association you will share a common thread with your Scots descended kinsfolk.

The Association members embrace their heritage and celebrate it in their lives.

They come together at social events here in Scotland, at the Glasgow Gathering held each October, at the Tobermory Games on the Isle of Mull each July, and at the International Gatherings that are held every five years on the Isle of Mull.

The Members benefit from access to the “Members only” areas of the website, quarterly newsletters and early notification of events.

By visiting this website you have shown an interest in your heritage. If you would like to take the next step and join one of the Associations you can find a link to your nearest one under 'Associations' in the menu on the left.

Friendship and family are what The Clan Maclean Association is all about and I hope that I will be able to welcome you as a member in the future.

The Hon Sir Lachlan Maclean of Duart and Morvern Bt CVO
28th Chief of the Clan Maclean
